Catholics like me value the Church’s living Magisterium. This gift ensures that, no matter how cultures change, the Church retains the authority to address moral and doctrinal challenges. Sadly, not all Catholics recognize the value of this guidance. Some prefer ambiguity and nuance that give the illusion of freedom while avoiding firm boundaries. Today’s debates over truth and human anthropology (especially questions about human nature) are loud, complex, and emotionally charged. With so many competing voices online and in academia,... Read more

As most of my readers know, I often write about what I consider the dangers of progressive thinking. This thinking frequently relies on tactics that appeal to emotions (feelings) and anecdotal lived experiences. Furthermore, any criticism of such tactics is quickly labeled “bullying,” “unempathetic,” or “hateful.” These tactics, I believe, are attempts to shame and silence critical and much-needed voices—especially conservative ones. As any parent trying to reason with a toddler throwing a tantrum knows, when reason confronts emotion, very... Read more

The main responsibility of Catholic Bishops is to shepherd souls. Such a responsibility requires clarity and charity in guiding the faithful in truth. “Pride Masses” endorse lifestyles and ideologies contrary to consistent Catholic moral teaching on human sexuality and marriage. Furthermore, the confusion caused by such “Masses” scandalize the faithful and put souls at risk. The USCCB MUST put a stop to such scandal! Please consider signing a petition I posted on CitizenGO. Here is the link: The United States... Read more

Guest writer: Pilgrim Introduction Yesterday was Father’s Day. As usual my children and grandchildren gathered to celebrate the day. After a meal and a few drinks, my daughter, now in her forties, surprised me when she said: “You’ve been different the last ten years Dad. I wish you’d been like this when we were young.” My two sons agreed. I was heartened when my four-year-old grandson came to my defense; “Granddad’s got super-powers,” he said. Our favorite game involves Marvel... Read more

Recently, I received some pointed criticism—both in my comment section and on another Patheos blog—accusing me of being an inhumane, psychopathic bully for supporting and promoting Catholic moral teachings. These charges stemmed particularly from my writings on abortion (Do You See Yourself? If Not, Why Not?) and gender ideology (Should Catholics Celebrate Pride or Fidelity?). The claim that I lack humanity came from an atheist reader, while the charge of bullying came from a Catholic. Ultimately, these criticisms amount to... Read more

Pride Month is once again here. This month marks a time when our cultural elites demand that we celebrate and affirm the LGBTQ community. Cities like San Francisco, New York, and Chicago host parades; corporations change their logos; government buildings raise flags; and media feeds overflow with demands for not only tolerance but affirmation and celebration. Schools host Pride-themed events, libraries promote LGBTQ literature, and children’s programming is often injected with Pride messaging. Sadly, voices within the Church now call... Read more

Recently, I appeared on the Heretic Happy Hour podcast. Hosted by progressive Christian Keith Giles and former progressive Christian (now agnostic) Matthew Distefano, the show tackles religious and political topics from a firmly progressive perspective. You can read my reflections on the appearance [here]. In preparation for the podcast, I purchased and began reading Reading Romans Right: Correcting Common Misreadings, Restoring Paul’s Original Intent, coauthored by Giles and Distefano. After I mentioned this, Keith asked me to write a review.... Read more

Recently, I had the honor of participating in the first panel of Patheos bloggers to appear on the Heretic Happy Hour. The show—hosted by Keith Giles and Matthew Distefano—often explores faith and politics through an unapologetically progressive lens. As a traditional Catholic (and a political conservative), I knew from the outset that my views would contrast sharply with those of the hosts. Still, any initial hesitation vanished as soon as the conversation began. Both Keith and Matthew engaged each guest... Read more

Most Saturday mornings, I attend a Catholic men’s group at a local donut shop. During a recent meeting, a fellow member presented the group with a tiny rubber figure (see attached photo)—a 12-week-old (in utero) pre-born baby. At first glance, the figure is shocking. At 12 weeks, we already possess all our human features. The figure clearly depicts eyes, ears, a nose, mouth, hands, and feet. Moreover, I couldn’t help but see myself at that stage of development. Do you?... Read more

Guest author: Pilgrim Introduction Of late I’ve been contemplating more and more the tension between the beauty and cruelty of nature; the beauty and cruelty that exists too between people. As I watch my grandchildren grow, I wonder how the world will treat and shape them, and I try to reconcile my belief in a good and caring God with a God who allows a world where survival so often demands suffering, competition, and death? Where humans, created in... Read more
